Food Safety Modernization Act

FSMA Overview

D
riven by “Federal Regulation”, a revolutionary shift in how food safety is handled by shifting the focus towards preventive measures. The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was signed into law on January 4, 2011. It aims to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifting the focus of federal regulators from responding to contamination to preventing it. FDA FSMA includes preventive controls for Human Food and Animal Food, contains specific requirements for Foreign Supplier Verification, Importers and identification of FSMA Preventive Controls Qualified Individuals PCQI training just to name a few.

Food Safety Modernization Act Summary

For the first time, FDA will have a legislative mandate to require comprehensive, science-based preventive controls across the food supply.

-Mandatory preventive controls for food facilities
-Mandatory produce safety standards
-Authority to prevent intentional contamination

FSMA recognizes that preventive control standards improve food safety only to the extent that producers and processors comply with them. Therefore. it will be necessary for FDA to provide oversight, ensure compliance with requirements and respond effectively when problems emerge.

FSMA, Foreign Supplier Verification
For the first time, FDA has the authority to ensure that any kind of food that enters the US consumer market is in fect safe for its consumers. For the businesses this means that they have must implement checks in place so any kind of contamination is caught before it enters the retail market. They also need to ensure that if they are ever audited by federal government, they are ready to show their preparedness.

GFSI Recognized Certification
FSSC 22000 and BRC Food
All organizations impacted under FDA FSMA – along with their suppliers must clear a GFSI-recognized standard certification such as FSSC 22000 for Food Manufacturing and Packaging, FSSC 22000 for Animal Food, or the BRC Global Standard for Food.

HACCP vs HARPC

FSMA has taken HACCP to a completely new level by introducing new requirements in addition to what was already included in HACCP. Commonly known as HARPC, it encompasses far more in terms of food safety measures and control, than a traditional HACCP plan.
